About me:

Flaming Guitar Pick

hey im CLYDE.
entp 7w6 | Full-time College Student
Nursing student. Agnostic.

I'm a pretentious asshole and have an interest in all things fiction and nonfiction. Here you will see amateur philosophy, theory, mania, and literary/film analysis (maybe).

I love analog notes, routine, and fine arts. I take my coffee black with no sugar and drink lots of hot tea. Love planes. I keep a commonplace book + try my best to write soliloquies. I took art classes for seven years straight and now I want nothing to do with it for my actual career. I still do art + write music and like all sorts of fiction and nonfiction.

If you'd like to imagine me in your head, I'm a bit short. I wear black, faded cowboy boots and denim jacket of the same description and have two dogs.

I'm busy most of the time but don't let that stop you from contacting me. I use Notion and Discord like my life depends on it (probably does) and you are open to asking for my Discord if you'd like.

All About Games:

Right now, playing mostly Marvel Rivals, lots of modded Minecraft (Cobblemon, Medieval MC, etc.), Assassin's Creed (Ezio trilogy), Palworld, Tower Unite, and puzzle games along the lines of The Room (game series), The House of Da Vinci (game series). D&D, love ALL guitar hero games unconditionally, and failed getting into MUDs. Going to play Blasphemous soon.

Sideline playthroughs: Expert mode run through Guitar Hero games, Sun Haven, Metal Gear Solid + Yakuza series + UmJammer Lammy (finishing up my run through the PaRappa the Rapper series), Silent Hill series, Final Fantasy series, Resident Evil series.

It's a lot all at once, but I'm quite dedicated to most of these. I just need long breaks from a single game, so I fill it in with a different game. They sort of support each other in my schedule, which ends up with long-standing playthroughs but also a lot of fulfillment for me.

Ahhh my brain lit up reading your About Me and Interests sections! I should give The Hobbit another try; I first read it in high school when I was going through a bad time with reading haha.

It's in your interests section so it's natural you'll have a bias but would you recommend Norwegian Wood to someone that's not finished 1Q84? I like the way the writing gets translated. Also, what makes you interested in that particular Murakami work? I am not well versed with the rest of his literature but

In terms of comics, have you ever read Watchmen by Alan Moore? I would be very surprised if you've not yet! You can read it for free on the Internet Archive.

Also, would it be okay by you for me to inquire a bit on how being a nursing student has been to you? Has the academic and/or professional culture been cutthroat and curt like it's often reported as? I wish you luck in such a field either way. Was being a nurse always the goal?

Either way, I look forward to reading your blogs and/or bulletins; I would like to warn you ahead of time that I am a philodoxer and a fool, so my 'insights' will not be meaningful nor am I guaranteed to be familiar with any set of topics you discuss or perhaps even intend to reference but I am eager to learn more anyways.

Before heading off, I would like to say you and your profile seem very cool; thank you for the add.

I'm so glad you enjoyed reading my page! I've totally had times where my relationship with reading was a strained one too.

I'd never actually read any work by Murakami when I picked up Norwegian Wood, but heard good things and was compelled to find out why why I kept hearing his name thrown around. I picked the book I'd heard (and forgotten why) had the most controversy. I easily understood when I read it. Later, I found out that most people say not to choose this book as an introduction into Murakami. I haven't read 1Q84, but people say the view of women in NW is similar to it, so if you don't intend to finish it or have a difficult time reading it then I'd actually suggest a different book by him (perhaps West of the Sun, which is next on my list so I can't guarantee its quality).

Yes, I have read Watchmen! If you have any suggestions for similar standalone works, I would LOVE to hear it. Shorter comics that aren't an ongoing series is easiest for me with my schedule.

Speaking of schedule, nursing school is absolutely as academic and cuttroat as its described. Luckily, I go to a school known for the professors passion and good nursing program. It's less cutthroat because the profs actually want their students to pass. That doesn't make it any less academic though. The studying is quite a handful and I find my sleep schedule to be very, very inconsistent. Not only that, but nurses say that basically all the early stuff you learn before your clinicals is easily forgotten and never used again. Still, its important to have a grasp on those concepts before moving forward just like any other STEM program.

I love philodoxers and fools. Every interaction is meaningful to me. Your comment was wonderful to read and I can say the same thing you did about my own insights. I love to listen, and I love to talk despite being busy and not always being fully versed in a topic, and I hope very much to see you around!

Sidenote, when I took A&P 1 (maybe a year ago, I don't remember the exact timeline), I was studying the anatomy of the skull and memorizing terms. The prefixes and suffixes weren't too difficult to grasp but it was still a very tough topic that took me way too long to study in time for the upcoming exam and was immediately forgotten afterward. My uncle (a nurse) came in to say hi a bit spontaneously during my studies. He proclaimed with a very comical, almost pitying grin that he didn't remember a single lick of it and that I'd never use the knowledge, along with most of the topics in the class.

I took that class as an online one instead of an in-person one, so I ended up doing dissections and the like on my dining room table instead of in a lab. Luckily, my housemates are also in the medical field so it didn't bother anyone. They told me that those hands-on dissections were the most important part of the class and complimented me on my work. It's still the thing I remember most and helped me understand the basic concepts a lot better than the hours I spent with my head in a textbook. (Btw, the thing about the formaldehyde hunger reaction is totally real. I ate a meal after every dissection. It felt strange. And borderline wrong.)

Anyway, what I'm saying is that the nursing field is academic, yes, but that most of the early stuff is memorization to establish a vague baseline of medical knowledge before doing real hospital work (wiping butts, keeping track of things, and such). + A&P is really still really fun if its a special interest, which it was for me at the time.

TL;DR What did Haruki Murakami mean by this?!
Yeah this is how I felt breaking open IQ84... Interestingly, I am much less bothered by the way his women speak, think, and act since there's a reoccurring theme of one of his protagonists lusting over a much younger character. When that started popping up some hundred pages in the book, I had to pause because the way it was being brought up/written about was less of the essence/point of Nabokov's Lolita and more like "this is a Haruki Murakami fantasy" and, after learning of a plot point in the third volume, "This is stuff that can get put you on a list." I wish I knew about this before getting a copy for one of my birthdays Ahhhh. The Murakami fans did not bring that up and I am still unsure how to interpret its presence, haha. I am unsure how to go about this without sounding too reactionary, especially since sometimes such themes are used for a proper greater message/commentary.

I can check out West of the Sun; I'll just read PDFs of it as I should have in the beginning.

> I love philodoxers and fools.

Philodoxers and fools, rejoice! [small jumping kitten GIF]

> The studying is quite a handful and I find my sleep schedule to be very, very inconsistent. Wow! If you used and still use Ankior some other flashcard studying method during all of that, is the studying still super intensive? I find that it helps me a lot with memorization of vocabulary and concepts, but not numbersthough I would imagine that it would be more helpful for me to use the cloze feature for such cases.

Either way I'm not super surprised by the demands since it's a pre-health professional school, but I was quite amused that fellow nurses told you that you're going to forget a lot of it, LOL.

> They told me that those hands-on dissections were the most important part of the class and complimented me on my work. It's still the thing I remember most and helped me understand the basic concepts a lot better than the hours I spent with my head in a textbook.

Oh, sweet! Dissection labs are what I am looking forward to; writing that out makes it sound so suspicious, noo.

> Btw, the thing about the formaldehyde hunger reaction is totally real. I ate a meal after every dissection. It felt strange. And borderline wrong.

I didn't even know that that was a thing until you brought it up and now I'm worried about actually getting hungry during dissection labs. I imagine most classmates would not care, especially if it's a morning lab, unless the classmates are somehow very elementary school-brained.

I get you on that feeling though LOL but thankfully it's presumably mostly or only from the formaldehyde on your part... unless?! The whole issue reminds me of that meme that used to go around except it's from the formaldehyde.

> most of the early stuff is memorization to establish a vague baseline of medical knowledge before doing real hospital work (wiping butts, keeping track of things, and such).

That makes sense! It sounds like the traditional academic-to-clinical type of curriculums in other health professions.

> I am much less bothered by the way his women speak, think, and act since there's a reoccurring theme of one of his protagonists lusting over a much younger character

Yup! I've actually seen other people compare NW to Lolita too. I've seen a lot of women say that Murakami unintentionally shows sexism and a portrayal of the male gaze BECAUSE he is sexist and is a product of the male gaze being normalized. His fanbase seems to be predominantly male. It's Lolita all over again, except this time its real (apparently) and he's not faking it! That's what I've heard anyway, and I haven't looked into it too much. Let's just hope no films are made of his books and that he's writing with the same criticizing intent as Vladimir Nabokov.

I'm a lover of knowledge so I'm giving his other book a chance, even if it means I have to read another excessively ill and damaged male MC going down a disturbed spiral and log it in my brain as a net negative. It's good to hear and discuss this stuff too, though I wouldn't say I'd ever enjoy it and I'd compare it to watching Taxi Driver for me. The "dark side" of humanity or adjacent topics has been a long-standing theme in media for forever. It's a duty to myself to say I can't simply write it off as something of no import, but instead have to take it and its cultural (albeit negative) context and impact into consideration when filing media like this away into my head. Luckily, I libgenned this stuff so if he's revealed to be a terrible guy he has gotten no profits from me. Usually if I feel passionate about an author I'll try to buy physical copies of the books I love, to lend and reread.

>...still use Anki during all of that, is the studying still super intensive? I find that it helps me a lot...

I actually don't use Anki but instead take notes by using dropdowns, which is practically the same as notecards anyway so you're right. I don't seem to have difficulty memorizing numbers this way, but perhaps there's something I'm missing. And, of course, I do spaced repetition and active recall. It isn't the study method or even the topic that makes it all intensive, it's just mostly the sheer amount of content to process, especially when I relied on Federal Aid and had to take 4 classes at once or I wouldn't qualify. Takes time, y'kno, and I personally find it difficult to spend that time without many breaks (my mind wanders very, very far). Pomodoro method modified to suit my specific tendencies and bouts has helped a lot but at times I would have no free time, burn myself out a lot, and become a huge loner for extended periods before I found any semblance of work-life balance.

> Dissection labs are what I am looking forward to; writing that out makes it sound so suspicious, noo.

LOL, me talking about how dissection makes me hungry is what made me feel like I sounded suspicious. My stomach fully growled aloud a couple times as I worked. And I've defo seen that meme around and understood what they meant immediately. Although, I found the brain dissection to be the least appetizing (wtf, can't believe I said that) because it felt the most uncomfortable. If I wanted to become a brain surgeon I definitely would've felt more comfortable during it because the knowledge gained from the dissection would save countless lives in the future. Instead, I just felt bad for that brain.
